Artist Talk following 'Stuck in Orbit: One Thousand Years'

post theater has created a situation in which the politics and psychology of the 20th century’s former East and former West, pessimism and optimism, meet in the form of two juxtaposed characters. The fictitious international space station PACE becomes a battleground of philosophies and beliefs. After the space drama: Artist talk

For many years, post theater has been working on post-documentary performances, blending intense research with fiction. Stuck in Orbit follows a series of reflections of Soviet era utopianism. The space race, at the height of the Cold War, was a combination of soft power diplomacy and military threat. Max Schumacher and Daniel Brunet (Theater Directors) will introduce the concept behind 'Stuck In Orbit' and invite the audiences to reflect on the performances and to share their impressions.

About the Venue

English Theatre Berlin | International Performing Arts Center

English Theatre Berlin | International Performing Arts Center is the German capital’s only producing and presenting organization in the Hauptstadt expressly dedicated to English, the 21st century lingua franca, as the working language. Our year-round programming comprises the Producing Series – Made in Berlin, the Presenting Series, as well as our Performing Series and Pedagogy Series. We are a proud member of Berlin’s freie Szene, the independent performing arts community, and are currently developing platforms to share our work within Germany and abroad. We consciously use theater and performance as living, discursive forms to bring artists and audiences into conversation with each other about our shared city and the greater world we live in.

About the performance

Stuck In Orbit

Valentina, a cosmonaut from Bulgaria and Fritz, an astronaut from West Germany, were launched into space thirty years ago at the height of the Cold War. Forgotten by their governments, they are now the sole inhabitants of a dysfunctional space station stuck on a decaying orbit around the planet Earth.

About the Artists

post theater, Max Schumacher, Daniel Brunet

post theater is an interdisciplinary performing arts unit without an ensemble. Projects range from theater to dance, multimedia performances to installations. Reoccurring themes are identity, resources and technology. The creative, haptic and original usage of video projections is a key component to the company’s work. post theater was founded in 1999 in New York, moved its headquarters to Berlin in 2002, opened a Tokyo branch in 2005 and one in Stuttgart in 2010. Hiroko Tanahashi and Max Schumacher are the artistic co-directors. In addition to the artistic work, post theater also gives lectures and workshops at art institutions and universities worldwide. post theater has won many awards, for example the Bremer Autorenpreis (2004 & 2011) and the Stuttgart Theater Award (2015 & 2017).

Stuck in Orbit is post theater’s first collaboration with ETB | IPAC. It is their first experimentation with two parallel versions (missions) and two different directors, Daniel Brunet and Max Schumacher.
