About the Venue:
English Theatre Berlin | International Performing Arts Center
English Theatre Berlin | International Performing Arts Center is the German capital’s only producing and presenting organization in the Hauptstadt expressly dedicated to English, the 21st century lingua franca, as the working language. Our year-round programming comprises the Producing Series – Made in Berlin, the Presenting Series, as well as our Performing Series and Pedagogy Series. We are a proud member of Berlin’s freie Szene, the independent performing arts community, and are currently developing platforms to share our work within Germany and abroad. We consciously use theater and performance as living, discursive forms to bring artists and audiences into conversation with each other about our shared city and the greater world we live in.
About the piece:
Knick-Knack To The Future
The project focuses on the processes of urban development using the Back to the Future movie trilogy as its point of departure. In Back to the Future, Part II, the teenager Marty McFly travels to the future in a souped-up sports car and lands in 2015: the city of Hill Valley is wholly transformed. The real 2015 may not look so futuristic, but cities have still changed immensely. First come the artists and studios, followed by the students and the cupcake cafés and then the well-to-do and boutiques. And this process takes place over increasingly shorter periods of time.copy & waste intends to open a fictional store, a concept store: Ruckzuck – Cupcakes & Time Travel. Here customers can enjoy cupcakes and cappuccino in a Back to the Future ambiance - during the day. At night, the store also offers time travel. Like Marty McFly, the visitors can travel to the past or dash to the future to prevent certain things from happening - or from not happening.
About the performers:
copy & waste
copy & waste have created theater pieces, performances, installations and films about life in cities since 2007. Nasty Peace is the first part of their trilogy PUBLIC SHOWDOWN about the transformation of urban space. copy & waste already implicitly dealt with the transfer of property at Kottbusser Tor in a collaboration with WestGermany in 2009. For Nasty Peace, they've returned packing a great deal of research material: conversations with residents, observations of everyday life, sociological, scientific and philosophical texts about property and privatization play as significant a role as Berlin Circle, a piece by Charles Mee inspired by the same source as The Caucasian Chalk Circle and fantasy material such as Game of Thrones and Masters of the Universe.
