Meet the Artists following 'Entering into Virtual Realities – Dancing with VR technology'

What if you could see how you are seen? What if you could step into the position of others while interacting with them? In „Entering into Virtual Realities“ we dance with 360° Camera and multiple VR-Headsets (Oculus Go) in order to – literally and metaphorically – step into each other’s standpoints. The audiences are invited to meet Einav Katan-Schmid and Christian Stein after the show and to discuss on the identity of the intersection of dance and the technology.

„Entering into Virtual Realities“ is the second part of a research collaboration which integrates dance, philosophical inquiry and VR technology. The first part „Playing with Virtual Realities“ explored how different practices and epistemologies can collide. In „Entering into Virtual Realities“ performers and audience – literally and metaphorically – step into each other’s standpoints. Our positions as performers and as audience will swap. This experimental setup is pushing the limits of current VR technology and how it can interact with live performance. How did the artists use the intersection of dance and the technology? What are the challenges for embodied perception in VR? What are the chances that VR technology offers for future developments in performing arts? Meet the artists after the show.

You can now reserve tickets (12 € / 8 €) including free admission to the post-performance discussion directly through Theater Scoutings! (up to 1 day before the performance) Just send an email and the desired number of tickets to reservierung(at)theaterscoutings-berlin.de.

About the venue

Dock 11

The factory level of Dock 11 in Kastanienallee in Prenzlauer Berg is a rehearsals room, teaching studio and dance stage in one. The stage programme has interdisciplinary supplements such as theatre, performance, literature, music, visual art, film and club art – however the main focal point of every performance is on purely dance elements. Together with its other premises in EDEN***** in Berlin-Pankow, Dock 11 has established itself as an important part of the Berlin dance scene. The unique combination of teaching, rehearsal and stage generates an exciting change of perspectives in both the artists and pupils, as well as among the audience.  (source: visitberlin.de)

About the performance

Entering into Virtual Realities

What if you could see how you are seen? What if you could step into the position of others while interacting with them? Would you be able to physically enjoy your position if you see yourself from the outside? Could you be immersed and reflective at the same time? How does experimental VR technology change the perception of dancers and audience?„Entering into Virtual Realities“ is the second part of a research collaboration which integrates dance and VR technology. In the first part „Playing with Virtual Realities“ we used the VR headset HTC Vive in order to explore how different practices and epistemologies can collide. In „Entering into Virtual Realities“, we use 360° Camera and multiple VR-Headsets (Oculus Go) in order to – literally and metaphorically – step into each other’s standpoints. Perspectives are mixed like never before, as the 360° camera becomes an active, moveable part on stage, which is live-streaming its footage to multiple VR-headsets. Our positions as performers and as audience will swap. This experimental setup is pushing the limits of current VR technology and how it can interact with live performance. Please bring your Smartphones.

He did his doctorate in modern literature and at the same time, worked on topics as terminology’s management and models of foreign language, bridging the areas linguistics, informatics and engineering. Since 2012 he is pursuing his academic interests and researching with the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin at the Interdisciplinary Laboratory Image Knowledge Gestaltung as the leader of the research area „Knowledges of Architecture“.
