About the venue:

Ballhaus Ost

Ballhaus Ost in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin is a venue for independent theatre, performance and dance. Housed in the former celebration hall and assembly rooms of the free religious communities of Berlin, Ballhaus Ost is the home for established independent groups and artists (such as the foam puppet theatre 'Das Helmi' or the choreographer Christoph Winkler) as well as offering the opportunity for lesser known figures from Berlin's vibrant independent theatre scene to present their work. Before its reopening as a venue, the ballroom was used during the GDR as a "Worker's Casino" and after the fall of the Berlin Wall as a billiard hall and club. Ballhaus Ost was founded in 2006 by the directors Uwe Moritz Eichler, Philipp Reuter and the actor Anne Tismer. Since 2011 it has been run by Daniel Schrader and Tina Pfurr. About the piece:

I AM A SHAPE, IN A SHAPE, DOING A SHAPE is a solo piece by the Berlin-based Italian choreographer and dancer Barbara Berti. In a free-flowing mixture of movement and language, of preconceived sequences and improvisation, Berti explores the interplay between the dancer and the spectators — an experiment in sensitivity where the slightest change in energy in the room may be picked up and amplified. The result is a performance full of quick shifts in atmosphere: from lyrical to humorous to matter-of-fact to philosophical. The performer is a kind of scientist in the middle of an experiment, taking notes while simultaneously being the scientific material itself and placing the audience in these parallel roles of observing and being observed. A circular spiraling movement between inner and outer worlds of dancer and audience evolves.

With contemporary dance, contact improvisation and physical theater as foundations, her artistic practice makes contact with the audience through a physical and textual translation of the performative moment. In 2014, her solo "I am a shape, in a shape, doing a shape" won the jury prize for the 100° Berlin festival at HAU 2. She has worked on projects with Judith Seng, Tino Seghal, and Gabi Schilling.
